A bird’s eye view can be tremendously valuable in many regards. In this new era where drones are so accessible, it is possible to capture aerial photos to assist in numerous ways. One might show off some real estate, monitor agriculture or even document construction for insurance purposes.

Drones have legal limitations on how high they can fly to take a picture. Orthophotography is the act of capturing numerous aerial photos and then stitching them together to create one (Ortho)photograph. This photograph is geometrically accurate and can be used to measure distances. It’s a lot like Google Earth but at a higher resolution.
The cool thing about the photos taken, all the data can be utilized to extrapolate 3-dimensional data. This new 3D map is called Photogrammetry. Not only can you measure length and width, you can now also measure volume, depth and height. This practical information is great for weekly progress tracking.
