To Discount or Not to Discount: Weighing the Pros and Cons

The Benefits of Discounted Projects

As a video production company, it’s not uncommon to be approached by clients with good causes, charities, or even friends who are looking for a discount or a favour. It’s tempting to want to help out and build relationships by offering discounted prices, but there are risks involved that may not be worth it in the long run.

One of the positive aspects of taking on discounted projects is that it can be a great way to invest in a relationship with a potential long-term client. Repeat business is amazing in any industry, and video production is no exception. It saves time and effort to have a client who is already familiar with your work and your process. Plus, it’s nice to help out a good cause or a friend.

The Downsides of Discounted Projects

However, there are also downsides to taking on discounted projects. Firstly, if the client doesn’t come back for more work, you may have invested a significant amount of time, energy, and resources into a project that doesn’t offer a return on investment. This can be frustrating and can harm your bottom line.

Secondly, the first time you work with a client often involves more administration and planning than subsequent projects. This takes up valuable time and resources, and if the client doesn’t come back for more work, it’s unlikely that you’ll recoup those costs.

Thirdly, taking on discounted work may mean putting off more profitable work. This can ultimately harm your business and make it harder to stay afloat.

Mitigating the Risks

So, what can you do to mitigate these risks? Firstly, be upfront with the client about your rates and what you can offer. If you’re willing to offer a discount, make sure you’re clear about what that entails and what the limitations are. Make sure the client understands that this is a one-time offer and that subsequent projects will be charged at your regular rates.

Secondly, make sure you have a contract in place that outlines the scope of the project, timelines, deliverables, and payment terms. This will help you avoid any misunderstandings or disputes later on.

Finally, make sure you’re able to prioritize your workload and manage your time effectively. If you’re taking on a discounted project, make sure you’re still able to meet the needs of your other clients and that you’re not putting yourself in a position where you’re sacrificing quality or profitability for the sake of a discounted project.

Conclusion

In conclusion, taking on discounted video production projects can be a good way to build relationships and help out good causes. However, it’s important to weigh the risks and ensure that you’re not sacrificing profitability or putting yourself in a position where you’re unable to manage your workload effectively. By being clear about your rates and limitations, having a contract in place, and managing your time wisely, you can help mitigate these risks and ensure that any discounted work you take on is a good investment in your business.

What is B-roll?

What is B-roll?

B-Roll: The Essential Video Production Ingredient

B-Roll is a term frequently heard in the film and video production industry. But, what exactly is it, and how does it influence the final video? Let’s delve into the complexities of B-Roll, and why it’s crucial to create a captivating video.

What is B-Roll?

B-Roll is the supplementary footage captured during video production, used to visually enhance the story being told. While the main footage, also known as the “A-roll,” focuses on the main subject or speaker, B-Roll is footage of people, places, or objects used to provide additional context, texture, and visual interest to the video.

Why is B-Roll Important?

B-Roll is an essential component of any video production as it can illustrate key points, highlight important details, or simply add variety to the visual content of the video. It provides additional context and visual interest that can make the video more engaging for viewers.

Sources of B-Roll Footage

B-Roll footage can come from various sources. It can be footage that was captured specifically for the video, such as shots of a particular location or action. It can also be stock footage that has been purchased from a video library or archive.

The Importance of B-Roll in Video Editing

B-Roll is often used to cover up cuts or transitions in the A-roll footage, creating a smooth transition between different shots or filling gaps where no A-roll footage is available. This technique is known as “cutaway” or “cut-in” footage.

Watch this video to see B-Roll in action.

The Emotive Power of B-Roll Footage

B-Roll footage can convey emotion and mood effectively. Footage of a person’s facial expressions or body language can communicate their feelings or state of mind, even if they are not speaking. Similarly, footage of a particular location or environment can help establish the tone and atmosphere of the video.

Creating Effective B-Roll Footage

To create effective B-Roll footage, it is important to consider the story being told in the video and how the B-Roll can support or enhance that story. This requires careful planning and coordination between the director, cinematographer, and editor.

Conclusion

In conclusion, B-Roll is a critical element of any video production, providing additional visual content that can enhance the story being told. Its ability to convey emotion and mood, fill in gaps in the A-roll footage, and smooth out transitions makes it an essential tool for any filmmaker or video producer. Understanding the role of B-Roll and how it can be used effectively can help to create more engaging and impactful videos that resonate with viewers.

The Speed-Cost-Quality Triangle

The Speed-Cost-Quality Triangle

Why You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too (Video Production Edition)

Welcome to the world of video production! If you’re reading this, chances are you’re looking to get a video made. Perhaps it’s for your business, your YouTube channel, or just for fun. Whatever the case may be, there’s one thing you need to know: the speed-cost-quality triangle.

The speed-cost-quality triangle is a simple concept that applies to almost any creative project. It states that you can have two of the following three things: low cost, quick turnaround, and high quality. But you can’t have all three.

Low Cost + Quick Turnaround = Low Quality

If you’re looking for a video that’s cheap and fast, then you’re probably not going to get a high-quality product. Sure, you might be able to find someone on Fiverr who can whip up a video for you in a couple of hours for a few bucks but don’t expect it to be award-winning material.

High Quality + Quick Turnaround = High Cost

If you’re willing to pay top dollar for a high-quality video and you want it done fast, then you’re going to have to open up your wallet. Professional video production companies with skilled editors, motion graphics artists, and sound engineers don’t come cheap. And if you want them to work overnight to meet your deadline, be prepared to pay extra.

Low Cost + High Quality = Slow Turnaround

If you’re not in a hurry and you’re looking for a high-quality video on a budget, then you can certainly find someone who can do it for you. But be prepared to wait. Good work takes time, and if you’re not paying top dollar, then you’re not going to be a priority for the video production company.

But wait, you say. Can’t I just have all three? Can’t I get a high-quality video done quickly and on a budget? Well, you can certainly ask. But as the saying goes, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Requesting all three is actually a request for a donation

As much as we’d love to give you the perfect video at lightning speed and for a low cost, it’s just not realistic. The video production industry is a competitive one, and we production to be sustainable so that we do not go out of business. When you ask for all three, what you’re really asking for is a donation. And while we appreciate your business, we can’t survive by frequently donating all of our services.

Finally

The speed-cost-quality triangle is a simple concept that applies to almost any creative project, especially video production. As a potential client, it’s important to know what you want and what you’re willing to pay for. If you’re looking for a cheap and fast video, then you’re going to have to compromise on quality. If you want a high-quality video done quickly, then be prepared to pay top dollar. And if you’re on a budget but you still want a good video, then be patient and give the video production company the time they need to do their best work.

We hope this blog has been informative and maybe even a little humorous. And if you’re still not sure what you want, then give us a call. We’re happy to help you figure it out. Just don’t ask us for all three.

Favourite Commercial of All Time!

Favourite Commercial of All Time!

Hello Ladies

My Favourite Commercial of All time

Today, the best commercial of all time just turned 12. Happy Birthday to “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.” February 4th, 2010 was when millions found out that “Anything is possible when your man smells like Old Spice and not a lady.”

My favourite commercial of all time is the original Old Spice Commercial. I was fortunate enough to see it for the first time in a movie theatre on the big screen. Everyone was chatting before the movie started but the room went silent as soon as the attendees heard the line, “Hello Ladies.”

The Original Old Spice Commercial: A Marketing Masterpiece

In 2010, the Old Spice commercial caused a stir in the advertising world, proving to be a revolutionary piece of marketing that took the world by storm. The commercial’s humour, creativity, and outstanding production made it a standout in the industry and propelled Old Spice to household fame. The commercial featured actor Isaiah Mustafa, who became known as “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like,” quickly becoming an icon for the brand.

Playful & Confident Concept

The commercial’s unique and eye-catching concept was a significant factor in its success. Mustafa, sporting a white towel, delivered clever lines with a playful and confident attitude, speaking directly to the viewer. This approach made Mustafa a threat and the guy that every man wanted to be like, creating an unforgettable and engaging experience for audiences.

Exemplary Production Value

The commercial’s production value was top-notch and played a crucial role in its impact. The ambient sound design was minimalistic, not overproduced, allowing the visual elements, such as the simple yet surprising set design, to shine. This minimalistic approach made the commercial stand out and more memorable compared to other ads at the time.

Highly Shareable

In addition to airing on television, the commercial was posted on YouTube, where it quickly went viral. This allowed Old Spice to reach a much wider audience than it would have been able to reach through traditional advertising methods. The commercial’s viral nature made it highly shareable, further contributing to its success.

Strength & Confidence Messaging

The commercial’s brand messaging was also a crucial factor in its success. Mustafa delivered lines that highlighted the strength and confidence of men who use Old Spice products, allowing viewers to associate these positive traits with the brand. This reinforced Old Spice’s market differentiation and created a positive image for the company, setting it apart from its competitors.

Conclusion

The original Old Spice commercial was a triumph of marketing, successful due to its unique concept, excellent production value, shareability, and impactful brand messaging. These elements combined to create a memorable and effective piece of advertising that still stands as an example of how to create an engaging ad. The commercial remains a testament to the power of humour, creativity, and innovative marketing.

Video Production Green Screen

Video Production Green Screen

What is a Green Screen?

A green screen, also known as chroma keying or bluescreening, is a special effects technique used in video production. It involves shooting footage against a green or blue backdrop, and then digitally replacing the background with another image. This allows filmmakers to create visual effects that would otherwise be impossible to achieve with traditional methods. It can also simply be utilized to help to save time and money.

Green screens are most commonly used in feature films where they allow filmmakers to put their actors in any environment they can imagine. However, this same technology has found its way into corporate video production as well. By using a green screen, corporate videographers are able to create stunning visuals without having to move their shoot location.

How is a Green Screen Used in Corporate Video Production?

The use of green screens in corporate video production offers countless benefits over traditional shooting techniques. For starters, it eliminates the need for costly background sets and props that would otherwise be necessary if you were shooting on-location at an office or other facility. Instead of having to rent or purchase these items, you can simply use a backdrop and some lighting equipment to achieve the desired look and feel for your project.

In addition, because the background of your scene can be digitally replaced with any image you want (including graphics or logos), it makes customizing your visuals much easier than if you were shooting on-location. Your corporate video will look professional and polished when you make use of this technology – something that cannot easily be achieved with traditional methods of filming.

Additional Benefits of Using Green Screen

Finally, because the green screen allows for accurate colour matching between different shots in your project, it ensures continuity throughout your entire video production process – even if different scenes were shot on different days or locations. This helps guarantee that all elements within your piece look consistent and professional – which is important when creating high-quality corporate videos!

10 . Get Reviews & Testimonials

Word-of-mouth reviews from satisfied customers act as powerful social proof when other potential buyers come across them. Encourage happy clients /customers who have used your product /service before, to share their experiences online either through reviews on platforms like Google, Facebook, etc. or even through video testimonials posted on YouTube. Makeup Tips for Your Video Shoot

Makeup Tips for Your Video Shoot

The Art of Makeup Preparation for Video Production Shoots

Makeup Tips For Your Video Shoot

When you’re preparing for a video production shoot, you want to look your best. Your makeup should enhance your natural beauty, convey your desired image, and look great on camera. But, how do you achieve this? In this article, we’ll explore various aspects of makeup preparation for video production shoots to ensure that you look your best on camera.

1. The Look:

Define Your Desired Image

The first step in creating a flawless look is to define what you want to achieve. Are you going for a professional, natural look, or a more dramatic effect? Depending on the type of video, you’ll want to adjust your makeup accordingly. For instance, if you’re making a corporate video, you’ll want to keep your makeup subtle and natural.

2. The Climate:

Understanding the Location

The second aspect to consider is climate. Different locations can have a significant impact on your makeup. It’s important to be aware of this ahead of time and make any necessary adjustments. For example, if you’re shooting outdoors, you should use a primer or a foundation with a higher SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. High humidity levels, or even rain, can cause makeup to melt or smudge, leading individuals to opt for long-lasting and water-resistant products.

3. The Glare:

Opt for Matte Makeup

The third aspect to consider is the glare that can occur on camera. Matte makeup is usually a better choice for video production because it helps minimize shine and glare. To avoid any unwanted reflections, be sure to avoid shimmery or glossy products and opt for matte formulas instead. Additionally, having oil-absorbing sheets on hand can be useful in preventing shine from perspiration.

4. The Complexion:

Use Concealer for Flawless Skin

The fourth aspect to consider is your complexion. Using concealer to cover any blemishes or dark circles can help create a more even complexion and make you look more awake on camera. With the right concealer, you can achieve a flawless, polished look that will translate well on camera.

5. The Art:

Nothing is off Limits

The fifth aspect of makeup is quite simple. If you are an artist and you want your makeup to be running down the side of your face while you shoot a music video, go for it. Nothing is off-limits when it comes to art. You should still consider protecting your skin from the sun, however, that all depends on how much you throw yourself into your work.

6. Nothing:

Everything is off Limits

Finally, a question that everyone should ask themselves is, “do I even need to wear makeup at all?” Makeup is not absolutely essential for everyone. If you can avoid it, go ahead and avoid it. Just like a video camera, makeup is a tool for you to use for your purposes. You can do a natural look with your makeup or you can go natural without makeup. It’s important to know that it is truly your choice.

Conclusion

By following these tips, you can be confident that you’ll look your best for your upcoming video production shoot. With the right makeup, you can create a professional, polished look that will look great on camera. Remember, preparation is key, so take the time to understand your desired image, the location, and the best makeup options to achieve your desired look.

Aerial Photography vs. Aerial Mapping

Aerial Photography vs. Aerial Mapping

Aerial Photography vs. Aerial Mapping

Aerial photography and aerial mapping are two types of aerial imaging that are often confused with one another. While both involve capturing images from an elevated perspective, the two processes have distinct differences that make them ideal for different purposes.

Aerial photography is the act of taking pictures of an area from an elevated perspective. This type of photography is most commonly used to capture landscapes and cityscapes or to document a specific event like a disaster or construction project. It is done using an aircraft or a drone equipped with a camera, either still or video. Aerial photographs can be used for various purposes including surveying land and creating maps, studying wildlife habitats, or analyzing soil erosion patterns.

On the other hand, aerial mapping is the process of collecting data about a certain area from an elevated perspective. Using specialized equipment like LiDAR scanners or infrared cameras, aerial mappers create detailed 3D models of the landscape that can be used for various purposes such as measuring distances and heights to creating detailed maps for navigation. In addition to topography data, aerial mapping can also be used to measure climate conditions or detect changes in vegetation over time.

The main difference between aerial photography and aerial mapping comes down to the purpose they serve: while aerial photography captures images for artistic and documentation purposes, aerial mapping collects data that can be used for analysis and measurement. This makes them two very useful but distinct tools in any field involving elevation-based imaging.

Q&A

Overcoming “On Camera” Nervousness

Overcoming “On Camera” Nervousness

Are You Nervous About Being On Camera?

Speaking to a camera lens can feel like staring down the barrel of a loaded gun

Being on camera and facing the lens, whether it be for a professional video shoot or a simple selfie, can feel like staring down the barrel of a gun. Nerves can be overwhelming and keep you from performing to the best of your ability. Fortunately, there are some tips and techniques you can use to help manage your nervousness so that you can make the most of your time in front of the camera.

1. Take a Moment to Relax

Taking a few moments to relax before shooting can help settle your nerves and get you into the right frame of mind. Relaxing can also come a little bit easier if you are wearing appropriate but comfortable clothing. Bring your comfy shoes along. Who knows, you may be able to wear them because your feet may not be in the shot. Note: Having a good night’s sleep can do wonders… but it’s not a deal breaker.

2. Know Your Lines

Knowing what you’re going to say before shooting will help alleviate some of your anxieties about being on camera. Rehearse your lines ahead of time so that when it comes time for filming, you already have them memorized and don’t have to worry about forgetting them while on camera.

3. Use A Teleprompter

If you have a lot of lines to memorize, ask the video production team if you can use a teleprompter. By using a teleprompter you can spend a bit more time focusing on how you present yourself rather than trying to memorize all of your lines. Note: Be sure to ask the video production team for the teleprompter before the day of the video shoot.

4. Work With The Team

The camera crew has no intention of stressing you out. They are a part of your video production team. As they strive to do their best, they want to do everything they can to help you do your best. It’s okay to lean on them. If you are nervous, you can let them know and they will help you out.

5. Have Fun

Remember that being in front of a camera is supposed to be fun! Instead of focusing solely on how nerve-wracking it is, try to enjoy yourself and appreciate how blessed you are to have this opportunity in front of an audience!

By following these tips and techniques, you should find yourself feeling more comfortable when facing down the barrel of a camera lens! With practice and patience, being on camera will come naturally and feel like second nature before long!
